Fishing

Fishing at the Wellspring Lakes: bait, rods, lures, the fight, springs, seasons, the odds and every fish.

All fishing happens at the Wellspring Lakes in the Haven. Every fish you land goes straight into your island's storage; fish sell, fill commissions and go into Workshop recipes.

The lake

/fish go takes you to the pier, and /fish rod gives your rod back if you put it away. The five waters are one lake: your bait decides which family's fish bite, not where you stand. Without bait only Meadow fish bite, and never a trophy.

Bait, lures and rods

Choose your bait and lure in /fish. They come out of your island's storage, so co-op members share them.

  • Bait. One is used each time a fish bites, even if you miss the hook. It makes bites 20% quicker and brings rarer fish. Make it in the Workshop.
  • Lures. A lure calls its water's great catch on every cast and halves the wait. It is only used up when you land the fish; if it gets away, you keep the lure.
  • Rods. Your island's best rod is used automatically. Each tier bites 5% sooner, adds strain more slowly when the fish surges and adds 1 point of rare fish. Rods are crafted in order in the Workshop, once per island.

Bites and the fight

A bite comes after 9 to 18 seconds, never less than 3, and sooner with bait, a better rod, a spring, the water in season and some companions. A common fish lands at once; anything rarer starts a fight.

A hooked fish rests and surges in turn, with a short warning before each surge. Reel while it rests: each reel brings it closer and eases the strain on your line. Reeling during a surge adds strain, and the line snaps at full strain. Strain drains on its own, and clicks less than 0.2 seconds apart don't count, so steady reeling beats spamming. The fish also escapes if time runs out, you walk more than 30 blocks from the bobber or you switch hotbar slot.

The first fish of each species your island lands gives three times the XP. Sale prices follow the daily rate.

Bubbling springs and seasons

Bubbling springs. Three springs bubble on the lake at a time. Each lasts 2 to 4 minutes, then rises somewhere else. A bobber within 2.5 blocks of one bites 30% sooner, and with bait it gets the best odds on the lake and a chance at a trophy.

Seasons. One water is in season at a time, changing every hour on the hour, UTC, in the order Meadow, Ember, Tide, Highland, Canopy. With that water's bait, bites come 15% sooner and its trophy can bite anywhere on the lake. /fish shows what is in season.

A trophy only bites on its own water's bait, and only on a spring, in season or with that water's trophy companion following you. Bonuses move points from common to rare: 1 per rod tier, 2 from the Fishing perk Keen eye and 2 from some companions. Without bait, all rare bonuses together stop at 3. Angler's luck at Fishing 11 adds 1 point of trophies wherever a trophy can bite.

Companion help

The beast walking with you helps your fishing. At Beastkeeping 6, the perk Fishing friend doubles its help.

Every fish

Each family's water opens with that family. It has four common fish, two uncommon, a rare, a trophy and a great catch that only its lure calls. Landing a great catch for the first time gives a title: Bloomwhisker, Furnace, Glassback, Thunderjaw or Rootmother Angler.

/fish log shows what your island has caught, with hints for the fish it hasn't. The log and first-catch bonuses belong to your island, so a co-op member's catch counts for everyone.
